Circle Skirt Field Manual
1. Choosing Your Skirt Cut
- Full Circle: 360° of continuous flare. Maximum theatrical spin and volume. Best for dresses and flowy skirts.
- Half Circle: 180° sweep. Flattering drape with minimal waist bulk. Perfect for daily wear, linen, and office skirts.
- Quarter Circle: 90° sweep. Clean A-line silhouette. Ideal for heavy fabrics like corduroy, wool, denim, or canvas.
2. Understanding the Cut Numbers
- Waist Arc: The radius measured from the folded corner (Point 0). Cutting this curve creates a waist opening matching your circumference.
- Hem Arc: Measured from that same corner point down to your desired length.
- Fabric Required: Estimated yardage including a 10% cutting margin for seams and leveling.
Bias Hang Tip: Because circle skirts are cut across the stretchy diagonal bias grain, the hem will drop unevenly. Always hang the skirt on a hanger for 24 hours before sewing the final hemline.
Measuring Waist Circumference Accurately
Your waist measurement sets the inner cut hole. Measure according to how you plan to finish the waistband:
- Natural High Waist: Measure around the narrowest point of your torso while standing relaxed.
- Fitted Zipper Waist: Use your body measurement plus 0.5 to 1 inch of wearing ease for breathing comfort.
- Elastic Pull-On Waist: Crucial step! Measure your hip circumference instead. A circle skirt has no stretch at the cut waistline, so the opening must slide over hips before being cinched with elastic.
Pro Tip: Keep the measuring tape snug and level to the floor, but loose enough to slip one finger underneath. Do not pull it tight into the skin.
